What Is Salted Caramel Sauce?
Salted caramel sauce is the sauce made by mixing sea salt, heavy cream and butter into caramelized sugar. It is basically a sweet sauce used as topping for desserts.
You can store this sauce in refrigerator and be sure to turn any dessert into a rich and classy one. This sweet sticky sauce is known as liquid gold 🙂 The sharp flavor of sea salt perfectly balances the sweet caramel taste while the cream and butter adds to the richness.
How To Make Salted Caramel Sauce Easily?
This is an easy recipe that you can easily make at home. You do not need candy thermometer or special equipment to make this sauce.
To make this salted caramel sauce first make the caramel by mixing some water with sugar. Set this in medium heat ans stir well for the sugar to dissolve. Once the sugar is completely dissolved stop stirring.
You can gently rotate the pan though. Cook in medium heat until the sugar reaches deep amber color. The sugar will bubble vigorously first and then froth before getting caramelized.
Gently add in the cream and mix very well in low flame. Next add the butter cubes and stir. By now the sauce will be thick.
Finally add the sea salt and remove from flame. Mix very well and cool completely. The sauce will further thicken on cooling.
What Goes With Salted Caramel Sauce?
Well, we like this sauce with pretty much all sweets and desserts.
Use salted caramel sauce for ice creams, waffles, puddings, brownies, cookies, pancakes as topping.
You can also use this caramel sauce for glazing cakes, use while making frosting or simply pour over fresh cakes.
You can also use this sauce as dipping sauce for fresh fruits. Apple wedges, banana goes well this sauce.
How To Store Salted Caramel Sauce?
Once prepared let the caramel sauce cool thoroughly first. The sauce thickens well on cooling.
Pour into a jar and close airtight. Store the salted caramel sauce in refrigerator. keeps well for 20 days.
Why Is My Salted Caramel Sauce Bitter?
Caramel sauce turns bitter when the caramel gets burnt. It is really easy to burn the caramel for anyone while making this sauce.
Once the sugar starts to bubble and froth keep a close eye for that amber color. Immediately mix in the cream and stir vigorously. Maintain lowest flame.
If you are beginner then once the sugar reaches amber color remove it from flame. Mix the cream and butter off the stove and whisk.
This is really not a difficult or complex recipe. Just that it needs a little attention and focus to make perfect salted caramel sauce at home.
Recipe Notes, Tips and Suggestions
I have used light brown sugar for caramel sauce. You can also use granulated white sugar
Be very careful while the sugar is caramelizing. If the sugar is caramelized for long time the sauce will turn bitter.
The sauce thickens after cooling so do not make it very thick intially
Store the sauce only after it cools down.

How To Make Salted Caramel Sauce Step by Step
Combine sugar and water in a medium sauce pan. Whisk well for the sugar to dissolve in water.
Once the sugar dissolves, stop stirring.
Continue to cook in medium flame till the sugar caramelizes and turns into amber color.
The sugar will bubble, turn frothy and caramelize. Do not stir at this stage.
Once the sugar is caramelized and turns into amber liquid, reduce the flame and add cream. Mix very well. The cream may bubble and splutter here, so exercise caution.
After the cream is well mixed, add salted butter and whisk well till the butter completely mixes.
Switch off the flame and add sea salt. You may also add some vanilla as I did.
Let the sauce cool down completely before storing. Store caramel sauce in clean, dry jar and store in fridge.
Serve salted caramel sauce as dessert topping.

1 CUP = 250 ml
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar light brown or granulated
- 2 tablespoons water optional
- 0.5 cup cream
- 0.5 cup salted butter
- 1 teaspoon sea salt increase or decrease to taste
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- Combine sugar and water in a medium sauce pan. Whisk well for the sugar to dissolve in water.
- Once the sugar dissolves, stop stirring.
- Continue to cook in medium flame till the sugar caramelizes and turns into amber color.
- The sugar will bubble, turn frothy and caramelize. Do not stir at this stage
- Once the sugar is caramelized and turns into amber liquid, reduce the flame and add cream. Mix very well. The cream may bubble and splutter here, so exercise caution
- After the cream is well mixed, add salted butter and whisk well till the butter completely mixes.
- Switch off the flame and add sea salt. You may also add some vanilla as I did.
- Let the sauce cool down completely before storing. Store caramel sauce in clean, dry jar and store in fridge.
