Kadappa is a stew made of moong dal, potatoes. The kadappa recipe is spiced mildly using whole spices. The combination of potatoes and moong dal is a very soothing mild combination. The flavor and taste should be very mild in this recipe. I like to use small onions in this recipe. The and taste flavor is good and also it looks nicer 🙂
To make kadappa recipe we need whole spices like bay leaf, cinnamon and fennel. The spice paste or masala paste is made with green chilies, fennel seeds and coconut. This mildly flavored kumbakonam kadappa tastes exceptionally good with idli. This may also go well with dosa but kadppa for idli is ideal.

Grind together grated coconut, roasted gram dal, fennel seeds and green chilies into thick paste. Pressure cook moong dal and set aside. Also pressure cook the potato and smash it slightly. There should be big pieces of potatoes here and there.
In a pan heat 3 teaspoons oil. Temper with whole spices, cumin seeds, curry leaves, green chilies, garlic pods. Saute well.
Add peeled onions and saute well. I forgot to add onions in this step. So I sauteed it later and added.
Now add the spice paste and saute till raw smell goes off.
Add cooked moong dal and smashed potato. Mix well. Season with salt.
Add 2 cups water and simmer till the kadappa thickens a bit. The consistency should be a bit thin like stew. Serve kadappa hot with idli.
