Ingredients

  • to grind to a paste:
  • 2 big tomatoes
  • 2 green chilies
  • 3 tablespoons grated coconut
  • For tomato sambar
  • 1/2 cup pearl onions
  • 1/2 cup cooked and mashed toor dal
  • 2 tablespoons sambar powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon methi seeds
  • Salt
  • 3 teaspoons oil

Instructions

  • Grind together tomato, coconut and green chilies
  • Heat oil in a pan or kadai. Temper with mustard seeds, methi seeds, curry leaves and pearl onions. Saute well.
  • Add sambar powder and turmeric powder. Saute very well.
  • Add the ground tomato coconut paste and saute till oil leaves from the side.
  • Add cooked dal and season with salt.
  • Add 1 cup water and bring to a boil. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add finely chopped coriander leaves and remove from flame. Serve tomato sambar hot with rice or idlis.

Notes

1. To make sambar without dal, adde 2 tablespoons fried gram dal in the tomato paste and leave out toor dal in sambar
2. You can coriander powder along with turmeric powder
3. You can use vegetables like brinjal, carrots.
