Ingredients
1cupsamai arisi/little millet
10pearl onionschopped
1carrotpeeled and finely chopped
1/2green bell pepperfinely chopped
2green chiliesslit
small piece of gingerpeeled and minced
10curry leaves
2teaspoonsurad dal
2teaspoonschanna dal
1teaspoonmustard
oil
salt
water
Instructions
Measure, rinse and drain the little millet thoroughly.
Heat 3 teaspoons oil (preferably gingely oil) in a kadai/wok. Temper with mustard seeds. Add urad dal, chann dal and saute well. Add slit green chilies, ginger, asafoetida and curry leaves. Saute ell for 2-3 minutes.
Add chopped onions and saute well till the colore changes slightly.
Add chopped vegetables and saute well till they turn a bit soft.
Add 3 1/2 cups of water to the kadai and let it boil well. Add required salt.
Once the water reaches the rolling boil stage, add drained little millet little by little. keep stirring with another hand to avoid lump formation.
Cover the pan and cook in medium flame. Check if the millet is all cooked after 8-10 minutes. Add more water and cook if needed. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Serve samai upma hot.
Notes
1. Use gingely oil for authentic taste and flavor. 2. You can make upma without vegetables and onions too.
