  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt
  • cilantro leaves for garnish
  • Grind to a coarse paste
  • 6 teaspoons channa dal
  • 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
  • 4-6 dried red chillies
  • 3 tablespoons grated coconut

  • Cook rice and toor dal separately until mushy. Cook rice with more water than usual,we need the rice to soft and mushy.
  • Chop the veggies, finely chop the tomatoes and onions. Soak tamarind in water for 30 minutes and extract thick juice.
  • Heat a big cooker/deep vessel and add 3 teaspoons sesame oil. Fry channa dal, dried red chillies and coriander seeds/powder well till aromatic. Switch off the flame and the coconut pieces and fry for few seconds. Let cool and grind to a coarse paste without water.
  • In the same pan add some oil and temper with mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add finely chopped onions and saute for 5 minutes. Add tomatoes and saute till mushy.
  • Add the chopped veggies and saute well. Add turmeric powder, ground paste ,mix well till the raw smell goes off.
  • Add the tamarind extract and bring to a boil. Add 1 1/2 cups water and let cook for 10 minutes.
  • Add the cooked and mashed toor dal, salt and cook for 10 minutes til the gravy thickens.
  • Now keep the flame at lowest and add the cooked rice slowly mixing well at the same time. Once the rice is thoroughly mixed, switch off the flame and close the lid. Rest for 10 minutes.
  • Open the lid add 1 teaspoon oil/ghee,mix well, add cilantro leaves and serve bisibelebath hot with raita, vadam.

1. Let the bisibelebath be little loose in consistency as it thickens by cooling
2. Use a big deep vessel.
3. If you want you can avoid tomato and increase tamarind.
4. Use sesame oil for best flavor and taste.
