Ingredients

  • 1 cup sago pearls
  • 1 small carrot peeled and chopped fine
  • 1/2 green bell pepper chopped fine
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt
  • For tempering:
  • 4 teaspoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon urad dal
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • a small piece of crushed ginger.

Instructions

  • Soak sago pearls in just enough water to cover or 8 hours. Drain and set aside.
  • Heat 3-4 teaspoons oil in a kadai and temper with musturad,urad dal,cumin seeds,green chillies,crushed ginger,curry leaves and asafoetida.
  • Once the tempering is done,add the chopped veggies and saute in high flame for 3-5 minutes,the veggies should cook yet retain crunch.
  • Add the drained sago pearls,mix well,add salt,turmeric powder and saute in medium flame until the sago pearls turn plump and transparent.Once done,add lemon juice to javvarisi upma,mix well and serve hot.

Notes

1. You can add onions instead of asafoetida.
2. You can little sugar along with salt.
3. You have to cook this upma until the sago pearls turns transparent else sago pearls will remain uncooked and pasty.
