Ingredients

  • For spice paste
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • 1 tablespoon roasted gram dal
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 2-3 garlic pods
  • Water
  • To make kadappa:
  • 2 tablespoons moong dal
  • 2 small potatoes boiled and peeled
  • 10 small onions
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeda
  • 2 green chilies
  • 10 curry leaves
  • Salt
  • 3 teaspoons oil

Instructions

  • Grind together grated coconut, roasted gram dal, fennel seeds and green chilies into thick paste. Pressure cook moong dal and set aside. Also pressure cook the potato and smash it slightly. There should be big pieces of potatoes here and there.
  • In a pan heat 3 teaspoons oil. Temper with whole spices, cumin seeds, curry leaves, green chilies. Saute well.
  • Add peeled onions and saute well. I forgot to add onions in this step. So I sauteed it later and added.
  • Now add the spice paste and saute till raw smell goes off.
  • Add cooked moong dal and smashed potato. Mix well. Season with salt.
  • Add 2 cups water and simmer till the kadappa thickens a bit. The consistency should be a bit thin like stew. Serve kadappa hot with idli.
