Ingredients

To make bread gulab jamu dough

  • 6 bread slices
  • 1 tablespoon maida/flour
  • 1/2 cup milk for soaking bread, do not add in dough

To Make sugar syrup

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4-5 saffron strands
  • 1/8 teaspoon cardamom powder

To Fry and garnish

  • Oil or ghee for frying
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons slivered almonds or pistachios

Instructions

Making sugar syrup

  • First prepare a sticky sugar syrup for bread gulab jamun. Dissolve 1/3 cup sugar in 1/2 cup water and boil in medium flame for around 8-19 minutes. Once the syrup turns slightly thick and sticky, add cardamom powder and switch off the flame. You can add saffron strands to the sugar syrup.

Making dough

  • Now take the bread slices and trim the edge. In a bowl take the 1/2 cup milk. Soak each bread slice in milk for few second and squeeze out well.
  • Take all the bread slices in a mixing bowl. knead well first for few seconds.
  • Now add maida and knead very well until the dough is very smooth and soft. Do not add water or more milk to the dough. Make 18-20 equal sized small balls from the dough. The balls should be smooth and crack free.

Frying bread gulab jamun

  • Heat oil or ghee in thick pan.Add 5-6 dough balls in hot oil and deep fry until golden brown from all the sides. Remove to a strainer to remove excess oil. Deep fry all the dough balls in the same way.
  • Prick each fried gulab jamun with a fork and add it to the warm sugar syrup. Let it soak for 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Remove the soaked gulab jamuns and roll over the sugar placing on a wide plate. serve bread gulab jamun ad required or pack it in gift box too.

Notes

1. make sure you fry the jaumns in low-medium flame, else the outer will turn dark and inside will remain uncooked.
2. the sugar syrup should be warm while adding the jamuns, if needed warm the syrup for few seconds.
3. Roll the dough balls as smooth as possible, of there are cracks the jamuns will break while frying.
