Murungakkai Vatha Kuzhambu Recipe

Murungakkai vatha kuzhambu-drumstick vatha kuzhambu is a yet another classic authentic recipe from Tamilnadu. Made with drumstick pieces this vatha kuzambu is so delicious and tangy. Serve with steamed rice for that perfect comforting meal!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon methi seeds
  • 1 teaspoon chana dal
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 10 pear onions
  • 1 tomato chopped
  • 1 cup drumstick pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 `tablespoons sambar powder
  • 2 tablespoons thick tamarind extract
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  • In a cast iron pan heat 1 table spoon sesame oil to smoking point,add methi seeds and let it splutter..Next add chilies, channa dal and saute for 2 minutes.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes,whole onions,cut drumstick pieces,turmeric powder,sambar powder and saute well for 10 minutes,till the raw smell goes off. Add the tamarind juice and mix well and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Next add water,salt and cook on medium flame till the quantity reduces and thickens. Add 1 more spoon of sesame oil,keep in high flame for five minutes and remove from heat.
  • Serve hot with rice and sesame oil.

Notes

Tomato is added for color,you can leave it out if not preferred.
Make sure to use fresh plump drum sticks as they will have more flesh. If drumstick is not tender it will be very chewy and take long time to cook.
You can use toor dal instead of channa dal.
