I shared a very easy and quick recipe for idiyappam yesterday and got so many requests for idiyappam kurma recipe. Usually in restaurants idiyappam will be served with kurma, sweet coconut milk and kara chutney. I personally like idiyappam with kara chutney more than kurma and idiyappam with coconut milk is not my choice 🙂 I always sweetened coconut milk is a dessert and not side dish. Same goes with poori shrikand also.I like both seperately but not as combo Well that is just me, I know these combos are a hit with most 🙂
Now coming to this idiyappam kurma recipe, it is a very tasty and flavorful kurma with loads of veggies. It is also a fairly rich recipe with cashews and poppy seeds. if you want to make low fat idiyappam kurma just leave out cashews or add 5-6. You can make this idiyappam kurma with coconut alone too.
To make idiyappam kurma recipe, I have used potatoes, carrot, beans, peas. You can add cauliflower, broad beans too. Steam the veggies until they are 90% cooked before adding the spice paste.
Serve idiyappam kurma with hot idiyappam. This also goes very well with dosa, rice.

Step by step idiyappam kurma recipe.
1.Steam or pressure cook peeled and cubed vegetables. Set aside.
2. Grind coconut, cashews and poppy seeds to a fine paste.
3. Heat 1 tablespoon kadai in a pan. Add 1 bay leaf, 2 cloves, 2 cardamoms and saute well. Add finely chopped onions and saute till soft. Add cubed tomatoes and saute till they turn mushy.
4. Add the steamed veggies and mix well. Add chili powder, turmeric owder and required salt. Mix well and cook for 5 minutes.
5. Add the coconut paste and mix well. Add 1 cup water and 1 teaspoon sugar. Mix well and cook for 20 minutes in sim.
6. Add cilantro leaves and switch off flame. Add lemon juice and mix well. Serve idiyappam kurma hot.

1 CUP = 250 ml
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups chopped vegetables
- 1 onion sliced
- 2 to matoes chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon kashmiri red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt
- 1 bay leaf
- 2-3 cardamoms 2-3 cloves
- 1 tablespoon oil
- To grind:
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 10 cashews
- 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
- 2 green chilies
- A small piece of ginger
- 2-3 garlic cloves
Instructions
