Mango Dal Recipe-Mamadikaya Pappu
Mango dal recipe also known as mamadikaya pappu is a delicious and tangy dal recipe made with pigeon peas and sour raw mango. Vegan and gluten free lentils stew to serve with rice.

For cooking dal
- 1 raw mango medium sized, sour
- 1/2 cup toor dal pigeon peas OR thuvaram paruppu
- A pinch of turmeric powder
For tempering mango dal
- 3 teaspoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon urad dal
- 1 teaspoon channa dal
- 10 curry leaves
- 2 green chilies slit
- 1 dried red chili
- A pinch of turmeric powder
For cooking dal
Wash and peel the raw mango. Remove the stone and chop the mango finely.
Take rinsed toor dal in a pressure cooker. Add the chopped raw mangoes
Mix well and add water. Also add a pinch of turmeric powder. Close the pressure cooker and cook for 4 whistles.
Once the pressure is released mash the dal and mangoes well. Season with salt.
For tempering mango dal
Heat 3 teaspoons oil in a small pan. Temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, channa dal, curry leaves, green chilies, red chili and turmeric powder. Mix well and add to the cooked dal.
Simmer for 2 minutes and remove from flame. Serve hot with rice.
