Variations with mango dal recipe:
- Mango dal can be made in many ways. You can add vegetables like drumstick, shallots in this recipe.
- Make a paste of coconut, green chilies and cumin seeds. Add this paste while the dal is simmering for a different taste.
- You can also add peeled and crushed garlic while tempering.
Use sour mango to make this dal. Also make sure the mango is raw and firm. The tangy taste from mango is well balanced by the lentils and makes this dal very delicious. Furthermore the tempering adds a very nice flavor and compliments the dal well.
Raw mangoes are widely used in Indian cuisine. We use raw mangoes to make aam panna, chutney, mango rice and pickles apart from this dal.
Serve mango dal with steamed hot rice and ghee. You can serve with papad or any vegetable dish like potato fry or okra fry.
