I often make quick meals that take 20 minutes or less, especially during weekdays. Some recipes that I have in my repertoire are sambar rice, masala rice, pressure cooker pulao and this arisi paruppu sadham.
Making arisi paruppu sadham is really easy as you need just a handful of ingredients for this. Also this is a no grind recipe that uses pre made sambar powder. Also you don’t have to chop an veggies except onions for this rice.
Serve arisi paruppu sadham hot with potato fry, vadam or raita. It also goes well in lunch box though it might turn a bit dry.
What Is Arisi paruppu Sadham?
Arisi paruppu sadham is a popular dish made with rice and toor dal from Coimbatore. It is an easy yet healthy one pot meal that you can make either in a pot or pressure cooker. Unlike sambar rice it is less mushy and has a distinct taste.
Arisi Paruppu Sadham Ingredients:
To make airisi paruppu sadham authentically par boiled rice is used. You can also use regular raw rice or jeraga samba rice. Long grained rice like basmati rice are not suitable for this recipe.
Next we need toor dals or split pigeon peas, sambar powder, turmeric powder, onion, tomatoes and curry leaves. Give a good drizzle of ghee once the rice is cooked and just before serving.
How To Make Arisi Paruppu Sadham?
First of all soak rinsed rice and toor dal together for 30 minutes. In the meantime chop onions and tomatoes. Heat a thick bottomed pan or pressure cooker base with sesame oil. Temper with mustard seeds, cumin seeds, methi seeds and curry leaves.
Next add chopped onions, tomatoes and saute well. Add sambar powder, turmeric powder and saute till tomatoes turn mushy. Now add the rice and lentils, mix and add required water. Season with salt, cover and cook till rice and lentils are completely cooked. If using a pressure cooker, cook up to 4-5 whistles. Serve hot with a drizzle of ghee.
Recipe Notes and Tips
Par boiled rice gives a distinct flavor and taste to this rice. Do use it if available.
Do not make this rice very mushy, the texture is slightly dry with grains separate.
When making for toddlers and kids you can add veggies to make it wholesome
Serve with mild raita and fryums.

1. Rinse and soak the rice and lentils together for 20-30 minutes. Chop onions, tomatoes and keep ready.
2. Heat a thick bottomed pan or a pressure cooker base with 2 tablespoons sesame oil.
3. Temper with mustard, methi and cumin seeds. Also add curry leaves and saute.
4. Add the chopped onions and saute till they turn a bit soft.
5. Next add the tomatoes and saute for a minute.
6. Add sambar powder and turmeric powder. Saute till the tomatoes turn mushy.
7. Drain the soaked rice and lentils, add to the pot and mix well.
8. Add 3 cups water and mix well. Season with salt.
9. Cover and cook till the rice and lentils are completely cooked. If using pressure cooker, cover and cook up to 4-5 whistles.

Ingredients
- 1 cup par boiled rice or raw rice
- 1/2 cup toor dal split pigeon pes
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 14 teaspoon methi seeds
- 10 curry leaves
- 1 onion , finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes , finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 tablespoon sambar powder
- water
- Salt to taste
