It is a glossy, ghee dripping delicious and rich sweet. A small serving goes long way here if only you can resist temptation :). I got few requests to share ashoka halwa recipe here and made it last week. This is a very famous sweet recipe mostly served in marriage feast. Ashoka is usually served as tiffin along with bonda and coffee on the eve of wedding.
Ashoka halwa recipe is very easy one but it can a bit tricky to get it right at the first time. Next we need good amount if ghee to make this halwa satin smooth with glossy look. If making for the first time be sure to read the recipe well and all the points given in the notes section.
To make ashoka halwa recipe we need very few ingredients. Moong dal, wheat flour,ghee, sugar, cardamom powder, nut for garnish. Wheat flour is sued to thicken the halwa and it also gives a very nice flavor and texture.

Step by step ashoka halwa recipe:
1.Dry roast moong dal until color changes slightly. Pressure cook moon dal until completely cooked and soft. Mash the dal thoroughly. If the dal is not mashed properly you can grind it or blend it until smooth.
2. In the same kadai add 2 teaspoons ghee. Once the ghee is hot add broken cashews and fry till golden. Remove to a plate.
3. In the same ghee add wheat flour and fry til nice aroma wafts out. Remove to a plate.
4. In the same kadai add cooked and mashed dal along with sugar. Mix well and cook in medium flame.
5. Add ghee 1 tablespoon at a time while cooking. As you add the ghee will get absorbed. Keep stirring continuously and cook in medium flame. Once all the ghee is added and halwa turns glossy, add food color and mix well.
6. Add roasted wheat flour and mix well. The halwa will begin to thicken and leave the sides of the pan.
7. Cook in medium fame for 3-4 minutes. Add cardamom powder and fried cashews. Mix well and remove from flame. Serve Ashoka halwa hot.

1 CUP = 250 ml
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup moong dal/ pasi paruppu
- 2 tablespoons wheat flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup ghee

- Cardamom powder
- Pinch of orange or red food color

Notes
2. Roasting the moong dal enhances the flabor and also makes the halwa non sticky.
