dalgona coffee or whipped coffee

I have said this many times and here I say it again, I am a coffee freak. Filter coffee is my all time favorite but one in a while I do enjoy a good espresso, latte or cold coffee. This dalgona coffee has become our new favorite, but mostly as dessert 🙂

Yes it is rich, creamy and cold, for me it is a desert 🙂 So if you like coffee and chilled creamy desserts, this is for you.  In spite of not adding any cream this coffee turns out wonderfully rich and yummy. Do try it out, its easy too.

So What’s Dalgona Coffee?

This korean originated beverage is somewhat similar to our Indian beaten coffee but exactly the same. This coffee is made with just three ingredients, instant coffee powder, sugar, water. The whipped up dalgona cream is cream over hot or cold milk.

It is basically whipping the coffee powder with sugar and water until stiff peaks are formed. This delicious rich coffee cream is served with cold milk or hot milk. Making with cold milk feels like having an amazing dessert 🙂

The secret of making perfect dalgona coffee is whipping the coffee powder until perfect peaks are formed. A hand blender helps greatly with this. While this is perfectly doable with hand whisk or balloon whisk, it will take some time and effort to do it manually.

Also note that this whipped coffee cream is very strong. You may need to start small and add more to taste if you can’t handle strong flavors. I used cream prepared with given recipe for 2 days to make 3 small servings each day.

dalgona coffee or whipped coffee

The name dalgona arrives from a korean sweet which is in same color. So are you all set this delicious whipped coffee making it round all over the internet? Listed below are the ingredients you will need.

Ingredients

Instant coffee powder- Fine quality instant coffee like nescafe is what you want for this recipe. Save your premium blend ground coffee for filter coffee 🙂

Milk- You can use any milk of choice. I have made this coffee with almond milk and regular milk, both turned out good. You can even use soy milk.

Sugar– Granulated white sugar works best here. Since I had only organic unrefined sugar I have used it for dalgona coffee. Do note that sugar is important for holding the peaks stiff.

Some Tips And Variations Before You Begin

Can I make this coffee without hand blender?

Yes you can use a coffee frother or even hand whisk or try using a good old fork like we do for beaten coffee. Any of these above methos will take more time compared to hand blender and suitable for small servings only.

Which milk is best for dalgona coffee?

As it always had, full cream milk yields rich and creamy coffee. However you can absolutely use any milk here. Vegans can use almond milk, oats milk, or soy milk. Also note that adding ice cubes will thin down the coffee a bit. So you can skip ice cubes and use thoroughly chilled milk.

How to make sugar free whipped coffee?

You can make this coffee sugar free very easily. Just whip the coffee powder with water and add to milk. However sugar helps in maintaining stiff peaks and without  sugar the cream peaks will fall flat very soon, so serve immedietly.

Can I use this whipped coffee cream in other ways?

Yes, this is a rich and delicious cream that is also economical. you can make

  • dalgona milkshake
  • dalgona ice cream
  • use it as pancake or waffle topping
  • Use as cake frosting
  • make dalgona popsicles and many more.
