Mullu murukku recipe or mullu thenkuzhal is a very easy to make murukku, if you have processed rice flour or even store bought idiyappam flour in and, this mullu murukku can be made with in 30 minutes. It is known as mullu murukku as it is made using star shaped achu and resembles thorn (mullu).
There are many variations in mullu murukku recipe, usually we make mullu murukku with rice flour, gram flour and moong dal flour (pasi paruppu mavu), but the one I am sharing today is fro Mallika Badrinath’s cook book and this mullu murukku recipes use only gram flour along with rice flour. One more thing that made my try this murukku was chili powder, I wanted to try some spicy muruku and tried this. I made small murukkus as they are easy to eat 🙂
To make mullu murukku recipe just few ingredients are needed, rice flour, gram flour, asafoetida etc. you can use melted butter or hot oil for fat. I have used oil here. I should have to try mullu murukku recipe with moong dal flour sometime, but we loved this murukku so much, very spicy, crunchy and addictive!

Mullu murukku recipe with step by step photos.
1. First begin by heating oil for deep frying. Once the oil is hot maintain medium flame.
2. Sift rice flour,gram flour very well for 2-3 times. Add chili powder, asafoetida, sesame seeds, cumin seeds and salt. Mix very well.
3. Now take 4 tablespoons of hot oil and add to the flour mixture. Mix very well and rub well.
4. Add water little by little and make a soft pliable dough. Do not make a hard dough.
5. Take the murukku press with star shaped achu. Fill 3/4 of the press with dough and make round murukku. If you are comfortable you can press directly in the hot oil, else make murukku on a clean cloth, butter paper or plate and then transfer to the oil.
6. Deep fry 3-4 murukkus depending on the size of your kadai. Slide the shaped murukkus and deep fry in medium flame till the sizzling (shh) sound ceases. Flip gently in between while frying. Drain to a kitchen towel. Allow to cool thoroughly and store mullu murukku in airtight container.

Mullu murukku recipe | Diwali 2015 snack recipes
1 CUP = 250 ml
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups processed rice flour/idiyappam flour
- 1/2 cup gram flour/kadalai mavu
- 4 tablespoons hot oil/melted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame seeds optional
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- Salt
- Oil for deep frying
- Water
Instructions

2. Make sure the dough is soft and pliable, if the dough is very hard murukku while break.
