Kesari bath is a very popular breakfast in Karnataka served along with khara bath.The combination of khara bath and kesari bath is known as chow chow bath.
I have had this khara bath as well as kesari bath many times when we live in Bangalore. The combination of khara bath or rava bhath, kesari bath, coconut chutney and filter coffee is just awesome.
kesari bath recipe is a very basic Indian sweet made with rava, sugar and ghee. These three are the main ingredients for kesari bath. The optional flavorings and colorants are also added. There is a slight variation in rava kesari and this kesari bath. In rava kesari, less ghee is added and more water is added.
kesari bath is a rich dish laden with ghee and nuts. So it is more of a festive dish. You can make kesari bath for special occasions . Rava kesari bath is a very quick to make dish so it can be made as naivedhyam in a jiffy for festivals like navratri, ganesh chaturti etc too. You can easily make this kesari bath in 10 minutes.
Unlike rava kesari, this kesari bath is in yellow color in most places. You can even add orange food color to stay true to the name kesari (kesar means saffron or orange).
To make kesari bath recipe we need we need fine rava,sugar, ghee, nuts, saffron and cardamom powder. Since we are adding less water, use fine sooji as it cooks quickly.
Serve kesari bath warm with khara bath and coconut chutney. You can also serve kesari bath alone as dessert after a rich meal.

Rava kesari bath recipe | Karnataka style kesari bath recipe
1 CUP = 250 ml
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup fine rava/ sooji
- 1 /2 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup ghee
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
- 4 tablespoons chopped cashews
- 2 tablespoons raisins
- Few drops of yellow food color
- A small pinch of saffron
Instructions
- Heat 2 tablespoons ghee in a pan. Add chopped cashews and raisins and fry well. Remove toa plate.
- Add rava to the same ghee and roast till nice aroma wafts out.
- Now add water to the same pan and bring to a rolling boil
- Add the roasted rava and stir continuously till the rava gets cooked well. Make sure no lumps are formed.
- Once the rava is completely cooked add sugar and mix well.
- Now the kesari mixture will loosen a bit. Now add food color, ghee and saffron.
- Keep cooking till the mixture thickens and leaves the sides of the pan.
- Add fried nuts and remove from flame. Serve kesari bath hot or warm
