Few years back, I got hold of this bread jamun recipe in a tiny recipe supplement booklet. At first I dismissed it off thinking it to be a ridiculous idea. Then while chatting y friend said it came out very well. I was intrigued to try it out too. I often make bread butter pudding, so I was expecting something similar. But boy I was totally amazed with the quality of jamuns. I have made it many times since then with outstanding results.
Making bread gulab jamun comes very handy when you want to make a sweet quickly. If you have a couple of bread slices, some milk and sugar, you can make this jamun in no time. The taste and flavor is a bit different from classic gulab jamun but very soft and delicious.
This time I made dry gulab jamuns with bread and they turned out awesome. Dry jamuns are the ones that do have dripping sugar syrup. They are rolled in sugar and served like candy.

How To Make Bread Gulab Jamun Step by Step
1. First prepare a sticky sugar syrup for bread gulab jamun. Dissolve 1/3 cup sugar in 1/2 cup water and boil in medium flame for around 8-19 minutes. Once the syrup turns slightly thick and sticky, add cardamom powder and switch off the flame. You can add saffron strands to the sugar syrup.
2. Now take the bread slices and trim the edge. In a bowl take the 1/2 cup milk. Soak each bread slice in milk for few second and squeeze out well.
3. Take all the bread slices in a mixing bowl. knead well first for few seconds. Meanwhile heat oil for deep frying, once the oil is hot maintain medium-low flame.
4. Now add maida and knead very well until the dough is very smooth and soft. Do not add water or more milk to the dough.
5. Make 18-20 equal sized small balls from the dough. The balls should be smooth and crack free.
6. Add 5-6 dough balls in hot oil and deep fry until golden brown from all the sides.
7. Remove to a strainer to remove excess oil. Deep fry all the dough balls in the same way.
8. Prick each fried gulab jamun with a fork and add it to the warm sugar syrup. Let it soak for 1.5 to 2 hours.
9. remove the soaked gulab jamuns and roll over the sugar placing on a wide plate. Serve bread gulab jamun ad required or pack it in gift box too.
Tips For Making Bread Gulab Jamun:
- Use fresh bread for this recipe to make soft gulab jamuns.
- It is best to use milk bread or white bread for rich taste.
- Use ghee for deep frying for richer jamun.

Ingredients
To make bread gulab jamu dough
- 6 bread slices
- 1 tablespoon maida/flour
- 1/2 cup milk for soaking bread, do not add in dough
To Make sugar syrup
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 4-5 saffron strands
- 1/8 teaspoon cardamom powder
To Fry and garnish
- Oil or ghee for frying
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons slivered almonds or pistachios

- Prick each fried gulab jamun with a fork and add it to the warm sugar syrup. Let it soak for 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Remove the soaked gulab jamuns and roll over the sugar placing on a wide plate. serve bread gulab jamun ad required or pack it in gift box too.
Notes
2. the sugar syrup should be warm while adding the jamuns, if needed warm the syrup for few seconds.
3. Roll the dough balls as smooth as possible, of there are cracks the jamuns will break while frying.
