Cabbage kootu is a tasty south Indian style cabbage dal without coconut. Kootu is a south Indian dal dish made with vegetables and lentils. Usually toor dal or moong dal is used to make kootu. Cabbage kootu is a very popular kootu recipe. Cabbage kootu can be made in many ways. Sometimes I make cabbage kootu with coconut. any a days this easy simple no grind cabbage dal is made at home. You can also add cabbage in poricha kuzhambu.
Cabbage recipes are made widely in Tamil cuisine. We also add cabbage in poriyal along with carrot and green peas. Cabbage tastes good in fried rice recipes too.
It is important to clean cabbage thoroughly before using in any recipe. We usually do not buy cut cabbage. Youcan cut the cabbage into quarters and keep in salted hot water for 10 minutes. Then You can rinse and drain the water very well. The cabbage is now ready to be chopped and use in recipe.
This cabbage kootu or dal is very easy to prepare. I usually cook the cabbage and dal together in cooker. This way the cabbage gets mushy along with dal. You can also cook the dal separately. Just saute the chopped cabbage along with tempering ingredients to avoid it turning mushy.
This cabbage dal has a soupy consistency. You can easily serve this cabbage kootu instead of sambar as main dish. This cabbage kootu tastes good with toor dal and moong dal. You can use either dal or a combination of both moong dal and toor dal in cabbage kootu.
You can serve cabbage kootu with rice, vadam or any poriyal.

How to make cabbage kootu recipe.
1. Wash the cabbage thoroughly and chop it finely. Take the chopped cabbage in a pressure cooker along withgreen peas and washed toor dal. Add 1 1/4 cup water and mix well.Pressure cook for up to 6 whistles.
2. Once the pressure is settled season with salt and bring to a boil.
3. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a small pan. Temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, curry leaves, asafoetida, turmeric powder and chopped green chilies.
4. Add the tempering to the prepared cabbage kootu and mix well. Simmer for two minutes. Add lemon juice and remove from flame. Serve cabbage kootu hot with rice.

Ingredients
For making cabbage kootu
- 1 1/2 cups chopped cabbage
- 1/2 cup green peas
- 1/2 cup toor dal or moong dal
To temper cabbage kootu
- 2 teaspoons oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon urad dal
- 1 teaspoon chana dal
- 10 curry leaves
- 3 green chlies slit
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
Other ingredient
- 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice
Instructions
To make cabbage kootu
