Yes, I always make Andra pappu recipes and other dal recipes in pressure cooker. Making tomato pappu in pressure cooker is easy and quick. Just use the pressure cooker base and you can make this dal in 15 minutes!
How To Make Tomato Pappu In a Pot?
You can easily make this Andra pappu in a pot too. Just soak the toor dal for 30 minutes prior to cooking. Use a thick and deep pot with a lid. Toor dal will be frothy while cooking.
Follow the same steps till adding toor dal. After adding the toor dal and water, cover and cook for 30-45 minutes. The cooking time varies depending on the quality of lentils.
Once the toor dal is completely cooked, you can mash them well with the back of ladle or masher.
What Can I Serve With Tomato Pappu?
This dal goes very well with freshly steamed hot rice and a vegetable stir fry. You can serve with potato fry, raw banana fry, cauliflower poriyal, vendakkai poriyal.
This tomato dal tastes good also with potato chips, vadam and raita.

How To Make Tomato Dal Recipe (Step Wise)
1. Pick and rinse the toor dal or split pigeon peas well. If not using a pressure cooker, you can soak the lentils for 30-45 minutes.
2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Temper with mustard seeds, cumin seeds. Add slit green chilies and minced ginger. Saute well for a minute.
3. Once the ginger is sauteed well add chopped onions and saute for 2 minutes.
4. Add chopped tomatoes and saute well.
5. Now add turmeric powder and chili powder. Mix well and cook till tomatoes turn mushy.
6. Add the drained toor dal and mix well.
7. Season with salt.
8. Add 2 cups water and mix well. Close the cooker and pressure cook up-to 4 whistles.
9. Once the pressure settles down, open the cooker and mix well.
10. Add chopped cilantro leaves and mix well. Serve tomato dal hot with rice.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup toor dal split pigeon peas
- 2 tomatoes, chopped ripe and big
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 onion sliced
- 2 green chilies slit
- 1/2 teaspoon minced ginger peeled and minced
- 2 garlic cloves optional
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon oil
Instructions
