So What Are Cheese Straws?
Cheese straws are basically cheese flavored snacks shaped into straws and baked. You can either make straws from scratch or shape the puff pastry into straws, sprinkle cheese and bake.
Of course the recipe can be further extended by adding your favorite spice powders and also veggies. You can make it healthier by using whole wheat flour as I did here.
I used carrots and bell peppers, you can onions also.
Which Cheese Is Best For These Straws?
Usually processed cheese powder or cheese cubes are used in this recipe. But I always use either grated cheddar or mozzarella. You can also use a mix of two to three cheeses.
Also increase or decrease the quantity of cheese as per taste.
Best Finger Food For Toddlers and Kids
Yup, these veg cheese straws are best finger food for toddlers and kids. It is easy to eat, healthy, crispy and very delicious. The recipe does contain butter. We do need butter in small quantities in our diet but if you should you can replace it with olive oil.
To make these straws more flavorful and healthier replace butter with ghee or clarified butter.
Vegans can easily use any vegan cheese and olive oil to make vegan cheese straws.
Some Tips To Follow
Use really cold butter for crispy straws.
You can use plain flour for lighter straws
You can also use any other grain flour along with wheat flour.

How To Make Veg Cheese Straw Recipe Step by Step
1. Preheat oven to 200C. Peel and grate the carrot. Chop bell peppers very finely.
2. Measure the wheat flour and take in a mixing bowl. Cut the cold butter into small pieces and add to the same bowl. Now rub the butter with the wheat flour with your fingers till the mixture resembles crumbs.
3. Add the grated veggies,grated cheese,salt,pepper powder and dried oregano.
4. Mix well and add just 1-2 tablespoons water and knead to a tight dough.
5. Pinch small balls from the dough and shape like cigars. Arrange the cigars in a baking sheet.
6. Bake the shaped straws in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes until golden.
7. Allow to cool for 5 minutes,serve vegetable cheese straw immediately or store airtight for 3-4 days.

- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/4 cup/50 grams very cold butter
- 1/4 cup chopped veggies
- 2 tablespoons grated cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper powder
- 1/4 teaspoon oregano
- salt
Instructions
