About This Recipe
Chocolate smoothie is a popular smoothie recipe made with cocoa powder or cacao powder, a liquid base, sweetener as main ingredients.
There are many ways to make smoothie with chocolate flavor. Some recipes use frozen bananas while some don’t.
Of late we are having loads of overripe bananas and I am using them mostly in smoothies. So this chocolate smoothie recipe contains bananas.
Here is what I do, I freeze the overripe bananas and thaw them for about 15 minutes on the counter before using in a recipe.
I also had a small piece of ripe avocado and I added that too for this drink. We could not feel its taste anyways.
I like to use almond milk for smoothies. We are not a fan of soy milk and I don’t like coconut milk in smoothies, so almond milk it is.
Here also I have used homemade unsweetened almond milk. As we are using bananas, I have thinned down the milk with some water.
This is a super easy recipe that you will keep going for again and again, feel free to leave the avocado out. Do try this yummiest healthy chocolate smoothie recipe and enjoy. It is

Ingredients & Substitutions
Almond Milk
This chocolate smoothie recipe is made with unsweetened almond milk. I have diluted the milk with some water as it was super thick. If you are making smoothie without bananas, you can use thick milk. Use chilled milk if you want a cold smoothie.
Sub– If you don’t have almond milk you can use unsweetened soy milk, coconut milk, oat milk. For more chocolate flavor you can even use unsweetened chocolate milk. If you want to make vegetarian variation you can even use dairy milk (regular milk) or Greek yogurt.
Frozen Bananas
I have used frozen bananas in this recipe as I had them handy. You can totally make chocolate smoothie without bananas too. If using frozen fruit, thaw it in the counter for few minutes for easy blending.
Sub- Instead of bananas you can use ripe mangoes, frozen strawberries or avocados or 3 tablespoons oats in this recipe. 2 teaspoon chia seeds can also be added for thick smoothie with creamy consistency.
Cocoa Powder
I have used unsweetened cocoa powder in this smoothie. For a healthier version you can use cacao powder. For a super rich chocolate flavor and creamy smoothie you can even add 2 tablespoons melted dark chocolate.
You can also add some chocolate chips or cacao nibs for richer taste.
Peanut Butter
A dollop of peanut butter lends a wonderful nutty flavor, rich taste and smooth texture to this chocolate smoothie. It is an optional ingredient though.
You can also use nut butter like almond butter, sunflower seed butter, hazelnut butter or even nutella for an indulgent treat.

I have used organic raw sugar for this drink. You can also use regular sugar, brown sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup or honey.

Expert Tips To Make A Perfect Smoothie
Making a perfect smoothie at home is super easy if you follow few tips. Here are few that I have gathered over years.
Use frozen fruit– I always like to use frozen fruit for homemade smoothies and milkshakes. Adding frozen fruits makes the smoothie super thick as well as cold, meaning you can choose to not ice cubes.
Liquid base– Any smoothie needs a liquid base which can be milk, yogurt or fruit juices or water. Yes you can use perfectly delicious smoothie with just water too.
Select milk depending on the fruits or vegetables. Almond milk goes well with berries, oats and coconut milk goes very well with tropical fruits like pineapple, mangoes.
I sometimes add orange juice, coconut water too depending upon the ingredients.
Ice cubes– if you are using fresh fruits or vegetables then you will need some ice cubes to thicken the smoothie as well keep it cold.
You can even use fruit juice cubes instead of ice cubes.
