Choosing Perfect Ripe Mango
Come summer and we are surrounded by ripe fresh mangoes. All the fruit shops, street carts carry boxes and boxes of mangoes which lure us to buy all the bounty, but choosing best ripe mangoes is a bit tricky than it looks.
While picking a mango we want to make sure we are getting the ones that are super sweet, pulpy, has smooth flesh, less fibrous and also very flavorful. Here I am sharing some tips that will help you choose perfect mangoes every time.
To make sure the mango is ripe, squeeze it gently, if it gives in slightly the fruit is ripe. Even though as a common notion that raw mango is green and ripe mango is yellow, color is not always the best indicator for ripeness. Some mangoes remain green even after ripening while few mangoes remain raw even after the peel turns yellow.
One more indicator to check ripeness is fruity aroma. Ripe mangoes have this wonderful flavor that lingers in the air stating they are ripe.
We mostly get raw mangoes and let them ripen on their own by leaving them on the counter. Sometimes we also place them in a tray lined with hay stack to speed up the ripening.
Once the mangoes are ripe, store them in refrigerator and use with in a week. To store the fresh mangoes longer you can always slice or cut into chunks and freeze them.
You can also blend and freeze as mango puree and use for up to 6 months and use in your favorite tropical desserts.
How To Cut A Mango
If you love mangoes but find cutting them challenging here are easy steps to show how to cut a mango. Mango has a large pit or stone and we should slice the fruit around it as it is a very hard one.
To slice it place the mango on a board, vertical way with stem side down. Now with a sharp knife cut one side of the mango from top to bottom in one swift motion.
Now cut the other side too in the same way.
You will be left with two cheeks of mango and the stone. Scrape any flesh from the stone.
You can slice the cheek as shown below. Enjoy as such or use in delicious mango recipes.
How To Make A Mango Smoothie Recipe
Classic Method
Rinse and slice 2 large or 4 medium mangoes as mentioned above. You will need 3 cups of cubed mangoes. If using frozen fruit measure 3 cups of mango chunks and set aside. If your mangoes are very ripe just scoop the pulp out as I have done here.
Take the mango pulp in a blender jar.
To that add thick 1.5 cups thick coconut milk.
Add 1-2 teaspoons sugar or jaggery. I used jaggery as it goes very well with coconut. You can add few ice cubes if you like.
Blend until smooth.
Transfer to a serving glass and serve mango smoothie immediately.
Mango Banana Smoothie
Add 2 cups chopped mangoes and 1 cup banana slices in a blender jar. If you have frozen banana you can use it two. Add 3 small bananas.
To that add 1.5 cups coconut milk.
Also add sugar to taste.
Blend until smooth.
Transfer to serving glass and top with dried berries, chopped nuts. Serve this delicious and thick smoothie immediately.
Strawberry Mango Smoothie
For this variation I have used orange juice as base but you can also use apple juice, tender coconut water. If you have mango juice you can simply blend it with strawberries too.
Add 2.5 cups chopped mangoes to a blender jar and blend until smooth. Add 8-10 fresh or frozen strawberries to it. Also add sugar to taste.
Add 1 cup orange juice and blend everything until smooth.
Serve this amazing smoothie immediately.

Tips To Make Best Smoothies
Use ripe sweet fruits- This is a no brainer tip right? Choose super sweet and nice fruits so that you go easy on sugar. Fruits like mango, banana are sweet fruits which are super sweet on their own and needs very less or no sugar.
Use a high powered blender for that absolutely smooth and silky beverage, especially if you are using ice cubes or frozen fruits.
For that wonderful creamy texture try and use frozen fruits. Frozen fruits make creamy and thick smoothies compared to fresh fruit. If you don’t have frozen fruits use some ice cubes or crushed ice as you blend. You can frozen fruit packs in the frozen section of your grocery store.
If you want to make thinner smoothie you can just use fresh fruits and more liquid. I have used fresh fruits and used less milk for thicker smoothie in this recipe.
Get the combination of ingredients right for best tasting smoothies. You can mix and match the fruits, liquid base, seeds etc and arrive at your best tasting smoothie ingredients set.
For filling and hearty creamy drink you can throw in some oats, chia seeds or Greek yogurt in this recipe.
