Delicious and thick pune special mango mastani in a tall glass with a spoon

Summer is here which also means mango season in India. Fresh ripe mangoes everywhere and there are so many ways to enjoy them along with eating as such.

We love mangoes just as every next person and gorge all sorts of mango delights milkshake, ice cream, lassi, ladoo and many more. This mango mastani is our top favorite and I make it often when sweet mangoes are available.

What Is Mango Mastani?

Imagine this, thick luscious and creamy mango shake topped with mango or vanilla ice cream, loaded with nuts, mango pieces and adorned with glazed cherries. That is mango mastani for you 🙂

It is a very popular and most loved drink of Pune, India. You will find this mastani served in many small shops and restaurants alike.

In fact there are many flavors in mastani other than mangoes available in Pune.

So Whats With The Name Mastani?

Mastani was the beautiful queen of the king Maratha Peshwa Bajiroa. He was a legend ruler and may be this drink is named after his wife. Also there is one more thought that mastani is named after the word mast which means excellent or awesome in Hindi.

Mango mastani is the most loved mango drink from Pune. There are so many mastani joints that serve this drink. I have had this many times during our stay in Pune. We loved the mango mastani from Sujatha Mastani in Sadashiv peth the most.

If you visit Pune do have this delicious mastani drink from Sujatha peth or Gujjar cold drink for best mastani experience.

Making Mango Mastani At Home

You can make mango mastani very easily at home. The recipe is fairly simple with just mangoes, milk and ice cream. the quality of the ingredients is what important here. Ripe sweet mangoes and good quality ice cream yields best matani.

Mangoes– Always use ripe and sweet mangoes for mango recipes like smoothie, custard, milkshakes, puddings. Sweet mangoes means more flavor and less sweetener in your recipe. I like to alphonso mangoes in this mastani recipe for its color, taste and flavor.

Milk– Use full fat or whole milk for thick rich mastani. Also do not use too much of milk. Just dilute the mango puree with a splash of milk. Mango mastani is supposed to be thick and hearty.

Toppings- Toppings are what that make this dessert interesting. Top your mastani with loads of chopped nuts, glazed cherries, chopped mangoes scoops of ice cream. Serve with a long spoon to dig in 🙂
