Masala tea powder recipe with step by step photos. An easy method to make Indian chai masala powder also known as masala tea powder. Tea is the most popular beverage of India and there are so many ways to prepare Indian chai. Indian chai or tea is a favorite beverage for us too. Though I am a complete coffee freak, a good cup of masala chai or ginger chai or herbal tea is a welcome change once in a while. I like to have masala chai during winters and monsoons especially. Many Indians prefer masala chai on a cold day or winters. Masala means mixture of spices in Indian cuisine. This masala tea powder is used in milk tea recipe. Masala tea is the common beverage served with samosa, bombay sandwich, mirchi bajji, masala vada too.
I usually make masala chai with freshly pounded spices. This year I wanted to make and store a batch of masala tea powder so that masala chai can be made in a jiffy. I referred Tarla dalal’s masala tea powder and made my blend. Having this masala tea powder handy for mornings will save lot of time. You do not have to pound spices for every cup of masala chai. Though there are so many tea masala powders like Everst in the market there is nothing like making your own chai masala. We can control the quantity of spices and make a blend to suit our taste.
Masala tea or masala chai is a healthy beverage too. All the spices added in chai masala has many health benefits. All these spices have healing property as per ayurveda. So according to ayurveda this masala chai is one healthy drink.
To make masala tea powder recipe I am sharing a common blend here. There cannot be a perfect masala tea powder blend. There is also no standard chai masala blend. Add more or less quantity of spices till you get your best masala tea powder blend.
Store masala tea powder in airtight container. Stays good for a month. Use in making masala chai as required.
Masala tea powder recipe or chai masala recipe card below:
- 1/4 cup cardamoms
- 1/4 cup dried ginger powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoon black peppercorns
- 3 tablespoons cloves
- 2 sticks cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
- Dry roast the all the spices except dried ginger powder until fragrant.
- Cool thoroughly. transfer to a mixer jar and powder the spices.
- Add dried ginger powder and blend again.
- Store the prepared masala tea powder in airtight container.
- To prepare masala tea using chai masala powder:
- Use 1/4 teaspoon to 1/2 teaspoon per cup.
- Add along with tea leaves and boil.

Add dried ginger powder and blend again.
