Chai ka masala is a aromatic blend of select whole spices typically used in Indian milk tea. There are numerous variations with this spice blend whilst cardamom, pepper corns and dry ginger remain the common spices.
In few recipes rose petals are added and few recipes dried mint, lemon grass or dried holy basil are added. Depending on your preference you can add herbs and spices like
- dried mint leaves
- dried holy basil or tulsi
- lemon grass
- dried rose petals.
While these above mentioned herbs are not a must for making chai masala powder, adding these will surely elevate the flavor and health benefits of your masala chai.

I usually make masala chai with freshly pounded spices. This year I wanted to make and store a batch of masala tea powder so that masala chai can be made in a jiffy.

Dry roast the all the spices except dried ginger powder until fragrant.
Cool thoroughly.
transfer to a mixer jar and powder the spices.
Add dried ginger powder and blend again.
Store the prepared masala tea powder in airtight container.
To prepare masala tea using chai masala powder.
Use 1/4 teaspoon to 1/2 teaspoon per cup.
Add along with tea leaves and boil

1 CUP = 250 ml
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup cardamoms
- 1/4 cup dried ginger powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoon black peppercorns
- 3 tablespoons cloves
- 2 sticks cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Instructions
- Dry roast the all the spices except dried ginger powder until fragrant.
- Cool thoroughly. transfer to a mixer jar and powder the spices.
- Add dried ginger powder and blend again.
