This south Indian recipe of okra fry is easy and simple to make. This south Indian vendakkai poriyal is a dry preparation served with rice for lunch. My twist to this easy vendakkai poriyal is addition of roasted peanuts.
Vendakkai means okra or ladies finger in Tamil. Poriyal means stir frying. I have shared few poriyal recipes here like carrot curry, potato curry etc.Poriyal is an everyday preparation in Tamil cuisine. Poriyal is served with sambar, udupi sambar, mysore rasam, vengaya sambar and rasam rice.
These dry poriyal also go well with lemon rice, tomato rice. This dry dish also can be served with dal fry, dal tadka, channa dal, moong dal.
To make vendakkai poriyal recipe or okra fry recipe select fresh tender okras. They should be bright green and snap easily. To remove the okra slime you can follow the below tips though okra slime is very good for health.
1. Make sure the okras or vendakkai is washed and pat dried completely.
2. The cutting broad and knife should be dry as well.
3. A teaspoon of curd or a tablespoon of besan can be added to remove slime while cooking.
Serve vendakkai poriyal or okra fry with rice, sambar , rasam.

How to make vendakkai poriyal recipe with step by step photos.
Wash and pat dry the okras.
Chop off the head and tail. Slice into rounds.
Heat a pan with 3 teaspoons oil.
Temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, dried red chilies. Add chopped onions and saute till they turn soft.
Add chopped vendakkai and mix well. Add salt, turmeric powder, chili powder and mix well.
Cook in medium flame for 8-9 minutes.
Add gram flour or besan and cook for 3-4 minutes.
Add roasted crushed peanuts. Mix and cook for 2 minutes. Remove from flame and serve okra fry hot.

1 CUP = 250 ml
Ingredients
- 250 grams okra/ vendakkai/bhindi
- 1 onion chopped
- 1 tablespoon besan or gram flour
- 2 tablespoons crushed roasted peanuts
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt
- 2 dried red chilies
- 1 teaspoon urad dal
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 3 teaspoons oil
Instructions
- Wash and pat dry the okras.
