Tomato sambar is a suitable side dish for idli , dosa, set dosa, neer dosa etc. However it also tastes very good with rice, potato fry too. Sambar is made practically everyday in Tamil homes and some variations in recipe always makes it interesting. I have shared some easy sambar recipes like kadamba sambar, pumpkin sambar, hotel sambar, tiffin sambar etc.
Tomato sambar is a very popular sambar recipe in tamil nadu. There are few variations in thakkali sambar recipe. Tomato sambar without dal is made with ground coconut and roasted gram dal paste. Here I have given fried gram dal a skip and used toor dal as in regular sambar. This tomato sambar is very tasty and different compared to everyday sambar. You can try this as a change and when you want to avaid tamarind. You can use moong dal or split green gram instead of toor dal or pigeon peas.
To make tomato sambar recipe use red ripe tomatoes. Desi tomatoes work best in this recipe. I have added pearl onions for tempering. You can use big onions too. You can even use asafoetida to make no onion garlic tomato sambar recipe.
Serve tomato sambar with idli, dosa or rice.

How to make tomato sambar recipe with step by step photos.
1. Grind together tomato, coconut and green chilies
2. Heat oil in a pan or kadai. Temper with mustard seeds, methi seeds, curry leaves and pearl onions. Saute well.
3. Add sambar powder and turmeric powder. Saute very well.
4. Add the ground tomato coconut paste and saute till oil leaves from the side.
5. Add cooked dal and season with salt.
6. Add 1 cup water and bring to a boil. Simmer for 5 minutes. Add finely chopped coriander leaves and remove from flame. Serve tomato sambar hot with rice or idlis.

Ingredients
- to grind to a paste:
- 2 big tomatoes
- 2 green chilies
- 3 tablespoons grated coconut
- For tomato sambar
- 1/2 cup pearl onions
- 1/2 cup cooked and mashed toor dal
- 2 tablespoons sambar powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon methi seeds
- Salt
- 3 teaspoons oil
Instructions
- Grind together tomato, coconut and green chilies
