During my recent trip to my favorite organic store, I saw a bottle dark chocolate makhana. Yes, makhana is on rage lately. There was an array of flavored toasted makhana like caramel, pudina , masala ones and this dark chocolate flavored ones too.
They looked very tempting and I was pretty sure they will taste yum. I was hooked to try it at home as it appeared pretty simple.
Yesterday I made this makhana in the same lines as how I make chocolate covered almonds and it turned out so yummy. I varied my chocolate syrup recipe slightly and added butter to this sauce to increase flavor. Also butter was mentioned as one of the ingredients in the chocolate makhana I saw in stores.

To make chocolate makhana you will need unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar, a pinch of instant coffee powder, butter and some dark chocolate apart from makhana.
We will begin by roasting the makhana in some ghee or you can even dry roast them. I usually roast makhana in ghee as the flavor is very nice that way. Side by side we will prepare a simple chocolate sauce. If you have store bought or homemade chocolate sauce handy you can simply use that also.
Once you have the sauce and roasted makhana ready, just too then together and dry for few minutes. Finally dust with some cocoa powder and serve.
You can store this chocolate makhana for 2 days but they do turn a bit chewy nevertheless delicious.
How To Make Chocolate Makhana
heat 1/2 teaspoon ghee in a pan. Add 2 cups makhana and roast in low flame until crispy and color changes slightly. It will take around 12 minutes in low flame.
In the mean time combine sugar, butter, cocoa powder, vanilla or cinnamon, instant coffee powder and dark chocolate squares in a sauce pan.
Add 1/4 cup water and a pinch of salt. Mix well and start cooking low flame.
keep whisking and cook in ow flame until the sauce bubbles and thickens well.
Once done, add the roasted makhana and toss very well.
Spread on a tray lined with baking sheet and dry for 5 minutes.
Finally dust with some cocoa powder and serve with tea or badam milk or pistachio milk.

- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon instant coffee powder
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract or cinnamon powder
- pinch of salt
