About This Recipe
White chocolate mousse is a classic dessert recipe made with melted white chocolate and whipped cream. Some recipes call for egg whites but mine is a vegetarian mousse recipe made without eggs or gelatin or even agar agar.
While I say this is a four ingredient recipe, it is actually a only 2 ingredient white chocolate mousse recipe. White chocolate and cream are the only ingredients you really need for this mousse. I have added vanilla and sugar but they are optional.
If you want the white chocolate flavor to shine through you can skip adding vanilla. If the sweetness from chocolate is enough for you then skip adding sugar.
This is a great recipe for basic mousse which you can garnish in so many ways. My first choice for garnishing are seasonal fruits. Strawberries or raspberries and mangoes taste so good in this recipe. You can also add fruit puree in the mousse mixture.
I made a small batch of three small servings and they were gone in minutes. It was so delicious, creamy, rich and perfectly set as you could see from the pictures.
For any recipe that calls for minimum number of ingredients, make sure to use finest quality ingredients.
Try to use white chocolate with at least 20% cocoa butter for best results. For cream you can use whipping cream, heavy cream or even low fat cream. I often make this mousse with low or medium fat cream only as they are easily available.
The richness of the mousse will vary with the variety of cream and chocolate used. You can also add few more ingredients to make this mousse richer, please see variations for more ideas.

How To Make White Chocolate Mousse Recipe
Place 1/4 cup cream in a small saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer in low heat. Add the chopped white chocolate morsels or white chocolate squares and whisk well until the chocolate is fully melted. You can also use white chocolate chips.
Set aside to cook thoroughly to room temperature.
Next place the cold cream in a medium bowl and start whipping it in a hand mixer or electric mixer or stand mixer until stiff peaks form. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or powder and 2 tablespoons icing sugar.
Whip until stiff peaks are formed. Start at low speed and gradually whip at high speed.
Add the melted white chocolate to the whipped cream.
Fold very gently without deflating the cream using a rubber spatula.
Divide the white chocolate mixture among three small serving glasses or dessert bowls. Cover with aluminum foil or small pieces of parchment and refrigerate for 4-6 hours. Do not freeze.
Once the mousse is well set add finely chopped fruits of your choice and serve immediately.
Variations
You can make this mousse in various flavors. Here are some ideas.
- Add 1/2 cup mango puree or strawberry puree or sweetened pineapple puree.
- Along with whipping cream you can add 1/2 cup cream cheese too. It helps in making a thicker mousse.
- Add few drops of rasmalai extract
- You can swirl any jam like strawberry jam or mango jam while serving.
- Fruit compotes like blueberry compote, strawberry sauce will be good as topping.
- Dark or white chocolate curls or shavings
- You can also top this mousse with nuts, granola if you like some crunch.
- Fresh berries like strawberries, raspberries, blueberries can be added as garnish just before serving.
Pro Tips
Choose the right chocolate– Use finest quality white chocolate you could source. I have used lindt white chocolate squares for this recipe.
If you don’t have white chocolate you can easily use milk chocolate or dark chocolate, just the color of the mousse will be dark.
Melting chocolate– Instead of doing it on stove top you can also melt the chocolate by microwaving it in a small bowl. Just use a microwave safe bowl. You can also use a double boiler and melt in medium heat without cream, stirring occasionally.
Quality of cream– A well made mousse is light, creamy, rich and airy. Egg whites are typically used to achieve this texture and in an egg free mousse recipe you have to use good quality cream.
While whipping cream or heavy cream is my first choice, you can also use regular fresh cream. Just make sure to use cold cream.
Scaling up– You can double, triple or halve the recipe. When making a bigger batch use a large bowl to whip the cream properly.
Storing– This white chocolate mousse keeps well for a week in refrigerator. Cover it well or store in an airtight container and pipe the mousse into serving glasses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, if white chocolate is unavailable you can use dark chocolate or milk chocolate. If using dark chocolate increase icing sugar by another 2 tablespoons.
For a very well set thick mousse, you can use 1/2 cup cream cheese or add 1/4 cup cooled corn flour custard to the whipped cream and fold gently. I have not added any of those here, the mousse sets well on its own.
Absolutely, this white chocolate mousse is made without eggs and it is delicious!
