Homemade Tortilla Chips Recipe.
There are two ways to make homemade tortilla chips, one is from scratch using maize flour and other one is to just use tortillas. Here I am showing you both ways.
I love cooking Mexican food at home. It is one of my very favorite cuisines. You will find recipes for popular Mexican favorites like veg tacos, guacamole, margarita, Mexican rice here and I am adding more too.
This homemade tortilla chips or nachos chips are our favorite snack. While I don’t make a full nachos plate often, we love these super crispy chips with roasted tomato salsa for snack.
I sometimes use homemade tortillas from my stash to make these chips. Most of the times I make these from scratch and bake them mostly.
Freshly baked warm tortilla chips with salsa or guac is such a wonderful snack that we all love.
The recipe is fairly easy even when made from scratch. It is a three step recipe.
- You basically make a stiff dough with maize or yellow corn flour, a bit of plain flour or wheat four and salt.
- Roll out the dough into really thin circle
- Slice into triangles and bake until crispy.
Homemade nacho chips are fresher, crispier and very delicious compared to the store bought ones. These chips keep well for couple of days and tastes great with any dip.
If you want to make instant tortilla chips you can just use homemade or store bought corn tortilla or even four tortilla. I have added instructions for making chips from ready made tortillas too in this post.
Once you try making your own nachos chips it would be very unlikely for you to go back to the packaged ones.

Ingredients For Nachos Chips
To make this recipe from scratch you need
Maize or yellow corn flour – maize flour or makki ki atta is used traditionally for making both tortilla and chips. Use fresh flour to avoid rancid taste in your chips
Some pain or wheat flour– I prwefer to add a small amount of plain or wheat flour to ease the rolling. If you want to make gluten free nachos chips you can just use maize flour.
salt & flavoring
Along with these some water and a bit of oil to knead the dough. Combine all the ingredients together, add water gradually and make a stiff dough which we will further roll, slice and then fry or bake.
Method-1 (From Scratch)
Oven Baked Tortilla Chips Recipe
Preheat your oven at 425 F or 190 C.
Combine maize flour, wheat flour, salt, chili powder or paprika, oil and salt.
Add water gradually and make a soft yet stiff dough. Do not knead the dough for long time.
Roll the dough into paper thin circle (1/7 or 1/8 ” thick).
Using a sharp knife slice into triangles. Using a fork prick all over to avoid puffing up.
Arrange the slices on a greased or parchment lined baking tray.
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the edges crisp up the chips turn golden.
After 10 minutes of baking, flip the chips and bake the other side for remaining time.
Serve with your favorite dips

How To Make Chips With Ready Tortilla?
You can use flour or corn tortilla for this recipe.
Stack around 4-6 tortillas and cut them into triangles.
Toss your seasonings and few drops of oil.
Arrange as single layer on a baking sheet.
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the chips crisp up well.
How To Serve Baked Tortilla Chips?
These nachos chips tastes great with al dips. For a delicious Mexican fare serve these chips with guacamole, fresh or roasted salsa, corn salsa etc.
Other dips like hummus, roasted pepper sauce, mango mustard sauce also goes very well with these.
You can also make a fully loaded nachos plate or use these to make toastada bowl.

- 4 tablespoons wheat flour can use plain flour too
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder

- 6 extra thin corn or plain tortilla
- 2 teaspoons oil
- salt to taste
- chili powder to taste
