During green peas season I absolutely cannot resist buying fresh green peas every time I go for veggies shopping. Apart from making peas pulao, methi matar malai, cutlet types, I also add a handful of shelled green peas in veggies to make quick aloo matar, gobi matar and also in sambar recipes.
I saw this recipe for matar ki kheer in a small booklet and I liked the idea of using peas in dessert. I took the idea and came up with my own twists to make matar ki kheer recipe.
Matar Ki Kheer Recipe
When you make and serve this yummy kheer, no one is going to believe it is made of green peas. Yes, none at my home did 🙂 You should totally make this kheer recipe as it is really one of the flavorful and easy desserts you will make!
Easy recipe– A kheer recipe can’t get simpler. Just boil the green peas, puree with sugar and simmer in the milk. So quick and easy.

Ingredients
You need just a handful of simple ingredients to make this kheer. You will almost find all the ingredients in the pantry and there is no need for a trip to grocery store!
Green peas- Fresh shelled green peas. Fresh seasonal tender green peas are sweet and tastes best in this recipe.
Cashews– I have added 10 cashews for four servings of this kheer to make the kheer richer and creamier. You can use blanched almonds or even pistachios. Add pistachios will make the matar ki kheer more vibrant.
Sugar– As in my most of the recipes, I have used organic cane sugar. Use sweetener of your choice.
Saffron and cardamom- For flavoring the kheer.
How To Make Matar Ki Kheer Step by Step
Shell and rinse the green peas once or twice.
Bring whole milk to a boil and set aside.
Add to the boiling water with a pinch of sugar and cook for 7-8 minutes. The peas should be soft and tender. Drain and rinse under cold running water.
Transfer the green peas to a mixer jar. Add cashews, sugar and 1/8 cup boiled milk. Grind to a smooth puree.
Add the green peas puree to the remaining milk and bring to a boil. Simmer for 6-7 minutes until the kheer thickens a bit.
Add cardamom powder and saffron strands. Simmer for 2 more minutes. Remove from flame. Serve matar ki kheer hot or chilled.
Can We Use Frozen Peas?
Yes, you can use fresh green peas that were frozen during the season. No need to boil the frozen peas. Just puree it. However you cannot use dried peas in this recipe.
How To Make Vegan Matar Ki Kheer?
To make this kheer vegan, you can use coconut milk in place of dairy milk. For four servings you will 1 cup thin coconut milk and 1 cup thick coconut milk.
Boil and puree the green peas with sugar. Add this puree to the thin milk and bring to a boil. Simmer for 6-7 minutes. Add cardamom powder and saffron strands. Add thick coconut milk and simmer for few seconds. Remove from flame.
You can serve matar ki kheer warm or chilled wit toasted nuts. We like this kheer chilled.
Tips And Variations
I have added cashews just for added creaminess. You can make this kheer without nuts also.
Use full fat milk for rich and creamy dessert.
This kheer thickens on cooling. So do not make it very thick.
The recipe can be doubled or halved.

Ingredients
- 1 cup green peas
- pinch of sugar
- 10 cashews
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 cups whole milk boiled
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
- few saffron strands
- Toasted chopped nuts optional
