It is summer, mangoes are all around and that is my perfect excuse to make a mango dish everyday 🙂 The abundance of lovely ripe organic mangoes are put to best use in milkshakes, mousse, ice creams, falooda and many more.

Moreover with no signs of rain, frozen desserts are our only respite from this scorching heat. Apart from ice creams we love sorbets and frozen yogurts at home. They are not overly sweet, has a delicious tangy taste and much lighter too. If you are not too keen on ice creams, give this froyo a try and you will love it.

A frozen yogurt or froyo is made by just freezing sweetened yogurt and they come in so many flavors. Strawberry and mango are house favorite and I make them often.

I usually keep it simple with just mangoes, yogurt and sugar. Sometimes I make mango lassi frozen yogurt by adding cardamom and saffron. You can also add vanilla. But with this simple recipe without any flavoring lets the mango shine through.

You can serve mango froyo as dessert or snack.

Which mangoes are good for this dessert?

You can use any variety of sweet and ripe mangoes. Less fibrous mangoes always taste best in desserts.

Do we need Greek yogurt for making frozen dessert?

Traditionally frozen yogurt is made with Greek yogurt as it is rich and creamy with less water content. However Greek yogurt is not absolutely necessary for this recipe. I have used homemade fresh thick set curd here. You can also use hung curd.

Why is my frozen yogurt icy?

Sometimes this dessert turns out a bit icy due to the moisture content in fruit and yogurt especially if low fat curd is used. To prevent ice crystals as far as possible you may

  • Use honey instead of sugar
  • Reduce the mango puree a bit by simmering it for 10 minutes
  • Use full fat yogurt
How long can I store this frozen yogurt?

You can keep this dessert for up to a month. Keep it in the freezer in an airtight container.
