This instant poha idli recipe was in my list for long time. I made it last week along with this amazing kara chutney. When I posted the kara chutney recipe I got many requests for this poha idli recipe too.
As many of you know aval is added in idli batter to make soft idlis. So this poha idli is super soft, very white compared to regular idlis. When you want to make something quick and filling do try this aval idli recipe.
You can use any kind of aval or poha for making aval idli recipe. The poha should be pulsed coarsely. Actually it is very handy to have roasted and pulsed poha in pantry. You can make idli, kesari or payasam in a jiffy.
I also use poha powder for coating cutlets and tikkis. You can even use red poha for making this poha idli recipe.
To make poha idli recipe I have used thick poha. I have used veggies like carrots, peas. You can even use beans, corn etc. You can make plain poha idli recipe.
Adding vegetables makes healthy colorful and nutritious idlis. I like to add veggies in rava idli, oats idli, sabudana idli, ragi idli etc. Here I have used baking soda and lemon juice instead of fruit salt. You can use fruit salt like eno too.
Serve poha idli hot with chutney, sambar or idli podi.

How To Make Poha Idli Recipe Step by Step
1. Dry roast poha in a hot pan for 3-4 minutes. It should waft out nice aroma. Allow to cool and then pulse to get poha rava.
2. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds and let in pop. Add urad dal, channa dal, curry leaves, cashews and saute well. Next add veggies if you like. Saute for 2-3 minutes. Allow this to cool completely.
3. Once cool add the seasoned veggies along with the oil to the pulsed poha. Mix very well. Add salt, curd and mix well. Add enough water to get idli batter consistency.
4. Just before steaming add fruit salt.
5. Spoon in the prepared batter in greased idli moulds. Steam for 10-12 minutes.
6. Once done allow to cool for 5 minutes before removing the idlis. Serve poha idli hot with chutney or sambar.

1 CUP = 250 ml
Ingredients
- 2 cups rice flakes/aval/poha
- 1/2 cup curd /plain yogurt
- 1/2 teaspoon fruit salt
- Salt
- For seasoning:
- 2 teaspoons oil
- 1/4 cup chopped carrots
- 1/4 cup chopped peas
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon urad dal
- 1 teaspoon channa dal
- 10 curry leaves
Instructions

Notes
2. You can let the batter sit for 1 hour and then steam to avoid fruit salt.
3. You can omit veggies and make plain idli without seasoning too.
